Lyceum

What Is a Lyceum?

The word Lyceum was introduced by very wise man and superb medium, Andrew Jackson Davis (1826-1910) who whilst in trance visited the Other Side (he called it the Summerland) and saw young people being taught in an open and welcoming environment where each child could learn and develop at its own pace yet with the full support and encouragement of the adults trained to bring out the best in each child.  The Lyceum movement is older than that of the Spiritualists National Union (SNU) and is an independent body under the SNU umbrella.  It is under the overall management of the Church Committee although the Lyceum has its own constitution and processes giving it the necessary autonomy to allow it to develop each and every soul that enters its group.

What is the Lyceum trying to achieve?

Better members of society. Every child is our future, anything we can do to improve a child’s social abilities, their understanding of the world into which they will have to live, is of value.

Do I need an appointment?

No, just bring your children along before the start of the evening service on the first Sunday of every month, but the Lyceum has to be limited to a maximum of 14 children so please check with one of the Conductors.

What charge is made?

We ask each parent to give each child just one pound per session. This is to cover the costs of items we have to buy such as paper, paint, pencils etc. the children also help manage the day to day finances of the group.

It is run by adults who have been trained and have a natural aptitude for caring for young children. They all have children of their own. We call the adults Conductors as they conduct the child’s behaviour and development whilst in the Lyceum.

Who can attend a Lyceum?

Any child or young person can attend from about the age of 5, that age is only a guideline because we firmly believe in Andrew Davis’s teachings so we treat each and every child as an individual. Therefore we allow the Conductors to make their own judgements on every child.

Where does the Lyceum meet?

The Lyceum is held in the Social Room of the church. This is designed so that the parents can attend the service in the sure knowledge that their child or children are being cared for by experts but more importantly maybe their spiritual needs and personal development is being expanded and allowed to grow without doctrine or dogma
